Digital World Makes Mobile News
by Riemon Rahman
http://www.digitalmobile.co.uk

Digital World recently grabbed the headlines on
'Mobile news'. As part of a Mystery Shopper challenge,
Digital World really impressed the mystery shopper
with expert knowledge and terrific sales advice.

'Eastern promise on a GPRS quest

Our Mystery Shopper heads across London's wild east end to
Romford and tests sales knowledge about GPRS. One clued-up
salesman in particular impressed more than the rest'

Several weeks after O2 and Vodafone had launched GPRS to
the retail market, I decided to find out just how well
this great hope was being sold.

I became a barrister on his day off looking for
greater 'connectivity' when out of the office and
wondering whether 'GPRS' was the answer.

Getting The Lowdown

I'd decided, in advance, to come clean, explain I knew
nothing about 'connectivity' or 'GPRS'.

Outside Digital World, an attractive young lady was
leafleting passers-by with a nice line in personalised One
2 One propaganda. Taking one of the flyers, I went in to
the store. She followed.

Salim told me he had a solution and began the best pitch I
have ever heard for high-speed data on the Orange network.
As a salesman, Salim was incredible. He actually made me
want to buy a data card even though I already have one.
And Salim gave me a choice of solutions.

As well as the data card, he suggested either infra-red or
cable connection to a 6210, or buying a 6210 and PDA
combo.

It transpires that Digital World have a dedicated small
business unit working above the store Monday to Friday.
Salim was desolate. He couldn't demonstrate the kit I've
no doubt he had upstairs.

GPRS was a technology in its infancy he said. After the
debacle of WAP, the networks just had to get this one
right, Salim told me. "People expected the whole Internet
on the screen of their phone.

BTCellnet got them to believe WAP would deliver far more
than it actually could."

"Was WAP rubbish?" I suggested. Far from it, Salim told
me. He then demonstrated how far WAP had come over the
past few months.

"He talked about a personal Intranet package delivered by
WAP that the business unit could set up for me to access
all kinds of information particularly pertinent to my job.

My very own office WAP portal. Could he make an
appointment for me to come in and see his colleagues, he
asked as he deftly manipulated the keys on his 6210 to
display, real time, a selection of WAP goodies.

Someone actually demonstrating a service to a potential
customer? Some mistake, surely.

We moved on to the question of tariffs. Salim waved away
my bumblings about not remembering how much I was
currently paying a month by offering to do a billing
analysis. If I sent him a few recent statements, he'd find
me the best package and then connect me to Orange.

Salim is an Orange evangelist. One 2 One was a great
network for people who wanted to phone each other
apparently.

Orange was for those who wanted to integrate mobile
connectivity into their lives.

At some length, Salim told me why. He told me about the
Orange Network Performance Promise, Value Promise, Every
Phone, Line 2, Overseas calls. Fax and Data, Free WAP
Weekend, Orange Reward Scheme and, finally, Wildfire.

Soon, he promised, I could even specify the voice I wanted
Wildfire to talk to me in. James Dean or Cindy Crawford.
Elvis or David Dimbleby.

As the sun began to set, I made it out of the store. But
not before Salim had extracted a contact address and a
promise I'd be back sometime during the week to let him
show me what mobile can do for me now and will be able to
do in the future. I guess that's why he didn't close the
sale of a Card Phone. He knew he'd hooked me on an
integrated business solution. Had this been real life and
not a Mystery Shop, he'd have been right. '
