It's Good To Talk
by D. Goring

The mobile telecommunications revolution is probably
the single biggest event in history since the industrial
revolution. We cannot ignore the fact that the ability to
communicate, no matter where we are in the world, is
essential to every aspect of our lives.

The introduction of mobile telecommunications all those
years ago signalled the beginning of an industry which is
among the biggest in the world, and continues to grow at a
rapid rate with a large percentage of the world population
now owning some kind of mobile telecommunications device.

Recently, we have seen the introduction of more advanced
devices, streaming video over mobile networks, camera
phones, multimedia messaging, java games, Bluetooth
capability etc. All of these introductions have increased
the popularity of mobile telecommunications, and every day
people rush to purchase the latest device to replace their
old, out-of-date device.

I am a firm believer in technological advancements and the
rapid progression of the mobile telecommunications
industry, after all I do make a living from the industry
myself. However, I sometimes worry about the personal
implications involved in our obsession with this form of
communication.

Since purchasing my very first mobile phone many years ago,
I have noticed a changing pattern in my personal
communication skills. My mother lives only a two minute
walk from my home. I talk with her every day, yet I rarely
visit her home. There is no doubt that mobile
telecommunications have played a big part in reducing my
ability to communicate with others on a more personal level.

So what is my point? The use of mobile devices is now an
important part of our everyday lives, and there is no doubt
that in many ways they do indeed improve certain aspects of
the way we live, work and communicate. However we need to
understand that mobile communications should never be
allowed to replace the good old fashioned face-to-face
chat. To sum up my article in one comment, "YOU CAN'T SEE A
SMILE OVER THE PHONE".
