The Cost Of Mobile Phone Loss And Theft
by Colin Weir
http://www.simstore.com
Mobile phone penetration has been nothing short of
spectacular with global numbers now in excess of 1 billion
handsets. The convergence of computing and
telecommunications will drive this number even higher.
People are no longer just making voice calls with their
phones: SMS and very soon MMS usage is also very high. As
handsets become more prevalent and capable, people are
carrying a lot more personal data on their phones; today
contact information, tomorrow calendaring and portfolio
information with PDA type applications. At the same time and
due to the nature of the devices (small and valuable)
handsets undergo a high degree of theft, loss and breakage.
Research around the world estimates annual handset disaster
at about 9.5%. Not only is this a problem for the handset
owner but also for the application providers. Without a
reliable platform the uptake of future applications will be
limited.
SimStore has been established to provide disaster recovery
services to handsets. Initially this enables device owners
to backup and manage address book information on their
phones, via SMS and a WWW interface such that in time of
disaster that information can be readily restored once the
owner has replaced their handset.
The company was established by Colin Weir to:
- Provide a platform for exploiting the huge uptake in
mobile phones and provide application services to the
forthcoming 3G infrastructure
- Provide an immediate service to 2G handset owners that
enables them to backup data held on their phone such as
address book information and restore it in the event of disaster
Dave Durbin, a business colleague and friend from a previous
and successful internet start-up in the UK joined the
investigation and together with a little bit of pixie dust
and a great deal of graft have delivered the service you are
now using.
The Company is in the business of providing horizontal
services for wireless devices: Mobile phones, PDAs etc. With
the sale of wireless devices having already overtaken PCs,
these untethered devices will be the major mechanism by
which users will connect to the network in its broadest
sense. From retail to corporate users the world is becoming
unwired. As with any emerging technology, any successful
service must make the user's life better and easier and must
do so in a way which is reliable and easy to use. The
horizontal solutions and services that SimStore offer are
oriented around providing reliability and ease of use.
Today SimStore is focussed on providing disaster recovery
and synchronisation services. In this environment users have
address book information that:
- May be lost when the phone is lost or stolen
- May duplicate or overlap with other identity information
held by the user and gain value from synchronisation.
In Australia it is estimated that there are about 12 million
handset owners with an official 100,000 having been stolen
in the last year and an estimated 1 million broken or
otherwise made inoperable. Mobile devices are hot products
for theft and due to their size are easily lost or broken.
This data is often not otherwise known or stored, arriving
via a phone call or text message. When the user has his
handset replaced the data on the original phone is not
recoverable; it was lost with the phone. Alternatively if it
is stored somewhere else such as on a piece of paper or even
electronically it requires re-entering onto the replacement
device. By using the service provided by the company, on
re-establishing their mobile service a simple click of a
button, or an SMS request to the service enables the
customer to have all of their data back on their phone and
usable inside of 10 seconds.
Once the disaster recovery technology and service is in
place the Company will use their knowledge of the market
gained during this time to investigate additional
application and service opportunities within this market.
