Upgrading Mobile Technology At Airports

As soon as airline passengers hit the airport after a flight, the cell phones flip open and communication instantly begins. Mobile technology is heavily used in many industries to keep track of information and to keep production lines running smoothly. However, the airport environment is one major industrial application that has not kept pace with the latest in mobile technology. Numerous technical opportunities for the use of mobile technology exist within the airport~s working environment that have not been recognized by the main suppliers of mobile technology. If the suppliers of mobile technology were to view the airport as a large extended manufacturing plant, the mobile technology industry could expand services within the large airports of the United States.

The airport flow of information, passengers, baggage, cargo and air carrier supplies is indeed similar a large-scale, process manufacturing operation. In addition, any number of contractors and suppliers are on-site with any major carrier at any time, making deliveries and performing assigned tasks. Today, we see the use of handsets by personnel at the gate. These people communicate with ticket centers, flight control, and pilots through the use of mobile technology. This form of communication is a far cry from what is possible if the airport operations were considered as more unified processing system.

One of strides in mobile technology that has been seen at airports is the use of bar codes in luggage handling. Luggage handling is streamlined by the adoption of bar coded luggage tags on checked baggage. Bar coded luggage processing is evident from curb side check-in to final baggage pick-up.

Conversely, an area that could stand improvement from utilizing the most up-to-date mobile technology at an airport involves behind-the-scene facilities management.
Inside this hidden view of airport operations, two-way radios dominate the preferred mode of communication from the apron to the gate. Other areas behind the scene - such as vendors, contractors and suppliers - need mobile technology inside each terminal. This upgrade involves some wireless networks and a minimal investment in service fees.

One area of an airport that does not need to be treated like a complex manufacturing process is the back office operations that conduct data handling. This technology could benefit from employing a simple bar code scanning system for the airport and airline's equipment. Rather than wasting time trying to locate lost luggage or tracking misplaced equipment, a bar code scanning system would save precious time and help the airport runner smoother.

As airports must adjust to an ever growing and evolving flow of staff, aircraft and passengers, mobile technology is a smart way to help the airport keep up with changes.
Implementing mobile technology takes some planning on the part of the airport and cooperation with the suppliers of this wonderful technology before airports will fully operate with the most up-to-date systems and methods.
